When a young Jewish scholar is found dead of poisoning, community leader Benjamin Abrahams hires Phryne Fisher to investigate. He fears the killing may presage a wave of anti-Semitism in Melbourne. Phryne soon finds herself deep in the fabric of Australia's refugee Jewish community, learning about the Zionist movement, pogroms, coded messages and gefilte fish. She picks up a little Yiddish, too… Abrahams’ wickedly handsome son, Simon has a number of valuable skills Phryne would like to take advantage of.

Raisins and Almonds Phryne Fisher #9 Phryne Fisher Mysteries edition by Kerry Greenwood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is a bit of a departure from the usual fare found in a Phryne Fisher mystery but still fun and interesting. Our fearless flapper finds herself drawn into Melbourne's Jewish community through her alliance with the scion of a wealthy Jewish family. When a murder occurs in this community and the wrong person is accused, Phryne is all in, ready to right what went wrong.

Be prepared for historical references to the Zionist movement and a bit of Yiddish thrown in for good measure. As always, Phryne Fisher is her cosmopolitan, bon vivant self as she strives to find the culprit. Still, this book is not quite as lighthearted as some of the others in the series have been. It is, nonetheless, very enjoyable. Fans of Phryne Fisher will not be disappointed.

Raisins and Almonds Phryne Fisher #9 Phryne Fisher Mysteries edition by Kerry Greenwood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The Hon Phryne Fisher is a unique, beautiful, stylish, sexy and larger than life heroine who romps through adventure after adventure in Melbourne in 1928 and 1929.

Raisins and Almonds is Book 8 in Kerry Greenwood's entertaining series about a female private eye set in the 1920's who dares to be rich, promiscuous, and single. Because Phryne collects so many characters into her life it is best to start reading at Book 1 Cocaine Blues Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries or if you have a read the bundle of the first 3 books Introducing the Honourable Phryne Fisher Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries 1, 2 & 3 (Phryne Fisher Mystery). On the latter you can see my fairly lengthy review which gives some background to Phryne's life.

A member of the Jewish community is poisoned when he opens a book in a local book store. The Gentile book store owner is arrested for the murder and her landlord, one of the richest Jews in Melbourne, hires Phryne to solve the murder. Kerry Greenwood extensively researched the Jewish religion and practices to make this book as authentic as possible.

Coincidentally Phryne's current lover is the landlord's son, so her meeting with his mother is a tense one. When the mother challenges Phryne about the affair, Phryne's tells her "I don't want to marry him -I just want to borrow him, I'll give him back when you want him. I know I can't keep him and I won't hurt him." Surprisingly the Phryne and the mother become good friends.

Once again the investigation thoroughly explores parts of Melbourne in the 1920's - this time the Eastern Market area. Thryne again solves the murder and its background by her thorough investigations of all aspects of the case that the police would not be able to cover.

I especially enjoyed this book because this murder investigation involved all of the charming and mixed circle of friends, staff, adopted children and animals that Phryne collected around her during her first few weeks after she arrived in Melbourne. In this book her maid and close confidant, Dot, shows her skills as an assistant investigator. A small ill-treated puppy, Molly, is added to Phryne's apparently dysfunctional but loving and supportive household.

One warning - reading Phryne Fisher mysteries can become an addiction. Once you read one you want to read them all.

WARNING Several of the books (including this one) have been made into an (Australian) ABC TV series. Key character and story alterations may change the way you think about this delectable series of books. To really understand Phryne you should try to keep the characters in the books and the series clearly separate in your mind.
I adore Phryne! And this book was excellent.

While Lin is out of town, Phryne finds a new lad... and he brings her into the Jewish community (to a point), with all of its complications... including a mysterious murder for which a bookstore owner is being blamed.

This one is balanced well- we get to spend some time with her various friends and household members, as well as exploring the various mysteries raised. In many ways, this is one of the tighter novels I've read so far in the series, and it's all the better for that!

Very recommended for period Australia, mysteries, and Miss Fisher's utter fabulousess!
I have really come to love this series. I really wasn't sure when I read the synopsis of the first book, Cocaine Blues. It was a time period I love, but something just didn't "sing" to me. Then I started watching the TV program on our educational channel and got hooked! So I went back to discover the characters and the world of the Honourable Phryne Fisher. I'm working my way through the entire series, both in print and in audiobook form. Now that says something when you can immerse yourself in the same story, three different ways, and still want to do it over and over again.

Each book has the same core of characters. It's like a family, they all become Phryne's family. Most are introduced in the first book, the rest come along quickly in the following few, and there they stay, with Miss Fisher.

This particular book was extremely interesting for me, the characters sharing the same background as do I. I've grown up hearing the stories, so I was particularly conscious of how the characters were to be portrayed. It was wonderful, done with with sympathy and caring, and painted a realistic picture of the time and era and history. I have found that in each Miss Fisher book, I've learned a little something new about a different topic, or a piece of history fell into place. With Raisins and Almonds, I had my own sources, and Ms. Greenwood's feel and knowledge were spot on.

I suppose I do have to a a word of caution for those to whom this might be a problem. As they would say, the books contain "scenes of nudity....." To me,that's just part of who Miss Fisher is.

I am a confirmed Kerry Greenwood fan. When I've worked my way through the currently available Miss Fisher books, then I'll go back to the beginning and start again.
